Austin Pilgrim is the dyslexic son of Ned and Hallie. Austin is present when his mother Hallie is supposedly kidnapped by unknown men. A month following Hallie's mysterious disappearance, Austin helps his father realize he needs to try and move on, causing Ned to realize he isn't able to take care of Austin right now. Leaving for a week-long cruise, Ned drops Austin at his aunt Alice's house and says a goodbye to his son, promising to return home in a week.
